Since 2004 APICAT has supported community and faith based organizations serving the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in their tobacco control efforts.

APICAT 2009-2010 Tobacco Prevention & Control Projects:

ENVIRONMENTAL COALITION OF SOUTH SEATTLE
Working with Seattle’s Laotian, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese communities to increase awareness of secondhand smoke issues and providing resources at community events.

KIKAHA O KE KAI OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB
Training youth canoe club members to become peer educators and address tobacco prevention & control issues in the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community.

KOREAN WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Provides culturally and language appropriate cessation services to equip smokers in the community with the knowledge and skills required to quit tobacco use successfully.

MY SERVICE MIND
Conducting seminars with Korean American families in Tacoma and Federal Way to educate them on secondhand smoke issues in the home.

SAMOAN NATIONAL NURSES ASSOCIATION
Increase  awareness on tobacco prevention & control issues and how tobacco use contributes to many health issues within the Pacific Islander communities.

VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST COMMUNITY (VBC) OF PIERCE COUNTY/Phuoc Hue Temple
Will publish a newsletter that includes articles on tobacco prevention & control issues and is distributed to 500 plus community members at the Temple’s annual New Year’s celebration. Provides up to three  language appropriate cessation classes for the Vietnamese community in Pierce County.
